What is a ceiling medallion?

It is a decorative ring or disc fixed to the ceiling around a light fixture or at the center of a ceiling to add detail.

What size medallion do I need?

A common rule of thumb is a medallion roughly the diameter of the fixture plus several inches, scaled to the room. Send room size and the fixture and we will recommend a size.

Can a medallion hold a ceiling fan?

No. A medallion is decorative. A fan must be mounted to a properly rated electrical box or support, and the medallion goes around it.

What is a two-piece medallion?

A two-piece medallion splits into halves so it can be installed around a fixture without removing it.

Can you make a custom medallion?

Yes. Send a drawing, photo or sample and we will make a custom size or pattern.

Are your medallions made of plaster?

No. They are lightweight EPS with a polyurea coating that reproduces the look of a plaster rosette.

How are medallions installed?

Typically with adhesive and, if needed, fasteners, then caulked and painted. Guidance is included.

What do you need to quote medallions?

Ceiling photos, fixture type, desired diameter, style reference and finish.

Medallions / rosettes | buy Custom Architectural Shapes

A ceiling medallion turns a light fixture into a focal point and gives a ceiling a finished, historic character. Decorative Architectural Shapes makes custom ceiling medallions and rosettes, from small decorative ceiling medallions to large pieces for lobbies and grand rooms.

Materials and detail

Each medallion is CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea coating. The result copies the relief of a plaster rosette without its weight or fragility, so it is easy to hang and less likely to crack. A ceiling medallion can be made as a single piece or as a two-piece set that goes around an installed fixture, and the center opening can be sized for a ceiling light medallion or a ceiling medallion for a ceiling fan.

Styles and uses

We make classical acanthus and leaf patterns, oval rosette designs, mid century ceiling medallion shapes with clean geometry, and art nouveau rose motifs. They suit living rooms, dining rooms, hotels, restaurants and houses of worship. A medallion can also be used as a wall rosette, as a corner detail on paneling, or in the center of a coffered section. Surface finishes can be white, painted or textured, and we can match your existing plaster or molding. Designers use medallions when a ceiling needs a focal point without a major renovation. The light weight keeps installation simple, and a large medallion can be delivered in sections for lobbies and high-ceiling spaces, so access and transport are not a problem on site. Send a photo of your ceiling and we will suggest a diameter and relief depth that suits the height of the room.

Decorative ceiling medallions, large ceiling medallions, small ceiling medallions, square ceiling medallions and round medallions come in modern, vintage, Victorian and art deco styles. Wall medallions and rosettes trim work as well, and foam is lighter than plaster ceiling medallions.
