A balustrade defines a terrace, balcony or staircase and adds a classical rhythm to the building. Decorative Architectural Shapes makes balustrade systems with balusters, rails and posts in styles that range from traditional vases to clean modern profiles.

System components

A balustrade system has balusters, a top rail, a bottom rail and newel posts or piers. Each element is CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea hard coat, which gives the look of a stone railing without its weight or cost. The surface resists moisture, UV and cracking, and the parts are easy to carry to a roof terrace or upper balcony. Classic baluster designs include turned vase, square and pierced shapes, and we can make a custom profile to match your architecture.

Types of railings and where they are used

Types of railings include terrace and balcony balustrades, stair railing for entrances, deck balusters on porches and parapet balustrades on rooflines. A balustrade is also an architectural decorative element in its own right: it can crown a cornice, frame a Juliet balcony or line a grand stair. For balustrade ideas, send us photos of your building and we will propose proportions of baluster, rail and post that suit the façade. A balustrade also helps a building read as finished at roof level: a low parapet balustrade above a cornice softens the roofline and hides equipment behind it. Matching piers, caps and newels can be added at corners and stair landings so the system stays consistent. Matching newels, caps and piers are available, and we can match your existing trim color, so the railing blends with the building.

Decorative balustrades and railings, decorative balustrade panels and decorative railing exterior are produced as balustrade systems. Architectural balustrades are an alternative to polyurethane balusters, and rooftop balustrades suit terraces and parapets.
