The capital and base are where a column becomes architecture. Decorative Architectural Shapes makes custom column capitals and bases that crown a shaft with the right style and proportion, whether the column is new or already in place.

Capital types

The five classical forms are Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite. A Tuscan or Doric capital is plain and strong, an Ionic capital or Ionic column capital adds scrolls, and a Corinthian capital or Corinthian cap carries acanthus leaves. These column capital types can be made for round and square shafts, as round column caps and bases or square sets, and as capitals for Doric pilasters or a corner pilaster at the edge of a wall.

Materials and fit

Every piece is CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea hard coat. Compared with plaster or stone, a foam capital is light enough to mount high on a column without scaffolding loads, and the coating resists moisture, UV and cracking. A Tuscan base, an ogee base or a stepped plinth can be matched to the same shaft, so capital, shaft and base read as one design. We reproduce historic details from drawings or from an existing piece, which helps with renovations. Where several columns repeat along a façade, identical capitals and bases keep the line even, and spare pieces can be produced later from the same pattern for repairs or later phases. Send a sample and we will make a matching set. We can supply a color sample before production, and send a drawing of the finished column so you can approve proportions before we cut.

Column capital styles such as Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Tuscan define the order. Column capital and base sets, an attic column base or a Doric column base, and the parts of a column capital, including abacus and echinus, are made to the column diameter. A concrete column capital look is available.
