Modillions are the small brackets that line the underside of a cornice and give it rhythm and depth. Decorative Architectural Shapes makes modillions and modillion blocks for classical and traditional façades, in sizes that match the cornice they support.

What a modillion is

A modillion is an ornate, horizontal bracket placed in a row under a projecting cornice. Compared with a corbel, it is more horizontal and less massive, and compared with a dentil, which is a simple tooth-like block, it is more elaborate and often carved with a scroll or acanthus leaf. Modillions traditionally appear under Corinthian and Composite cornices, but they also adorn eaves, parapets, pediments, balconies and entablatures.

Foam modillion blocks

Each piece is CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea hard coat. The coating resists moisture, UV and cracking, so modillion blocks do not rot or split as wood does, and the light weight makes long rows of identical pieces easy to fix. Spacing and projection can be matched to your cornice or eave, and the same profile can be used on a modillion cornice at a roofline, a porch, or an interior cornice in a hall or lobby. Matching dentil blocks and cornices can be produced for the same façade.

Proportion matters with modillions. The depth, width and spacing should follow the size of the cornice, usually with the gap between blocks close to the width of a block. We help you set these numbers from your elevations, so the row looks balanced from the street. Because foam is light, long runs can be fixed in sections, which saves time on scaffolding and reduces labor on site.

Custom modillions can follow a historic pattern or a new design, and modillion blocks are supplied cut to length with the spacing matched to your cornice. In modillions architecture, the row sets the rhythm of the entablature, which is why exact repeat cutting matters.
