Window sills and horizontal bands give a façade its horizontal lines and a clear division between floors. Decorative Architectural Shapes makes window sills and bands for stucco, brick and stone buildings, from modern flat profiles to classical sills with brackets.

What sills and bands do

A window sill is the sloped ledge below a window that sheds water away from the wall. A band, also called a belt course, band course or string course, is a continuous horizontal strip that runs across the façade, often at sill level, and marks the floors of the building. Together they add shadow lines, make windows look larger and conceal joints, and they can hide the flashing that keeps water out at floor lines.

Foam construction

Each piece is CNC-cut from high-density EPS and covered with a polyurea hard coat. The coating resists moisture, UV and cracking, and the light weight makes long bands easy to carry and fix on tall walls. Modern window sills can be a clean slab with a slight projection, while a decorative window sill can have a molded edge, a drip groove and corbel supports. Profiles can be matched to other elements such as cornices, quoins and window surrounds, so the façade reads as one composition.

Bands are especially useful on long, plain elevations. A single course at floor level breaks up a large stucco wall, lines up the window sills and gives the building a base, a middle and a top. On commercial and multifamily projects, one repeated profile keeps the cost of detailing low while the façade still looks designed, and replacement pieces can be cut from the same drawings years later.

Decorative foam sills are not limited to exteriors. Modern interior window sills, with a clean slab profile, can be produced from the same material and finished to match the walls, so exterior and interior windows share one design language.
